Crime Prevention Tip of the Month

January 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings!
Officer GordWelcome to the Crime Prevention Tip of the Month. First, a little about me. I'm a working Police Officer in my thirtieth year with a major North American Police Service. I've been involved in Crime Prevention for 9 years and specialize in CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). In fact, I instruct other officers in this at the Police College. In my position as Crime Prevention Officer, I consult with homeowners, businesses and developers in their attempt to design out crime.
I am delighted to contribute to Mr. Goodbar's website. I firmly believe that physical security is the best kind of security because it leaves no question in the mind of the criminal as to the premise's level of protection. In my opinion, the use of window bars is the next best visual deterrent to having a Police Officer standing on your lawn.
Protecting Rural Properties
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Living in the country doesn't mean leaving crime behind. Rural properties are isolated, so thieves don't have to worry about noise or being seen. These residences are often empty during the day, making them easy targets. And many people choosing country life are trusting and welcoming, leaving their doors unlocked and their car keys in the ignition, making it even easier for criminals to target them.

Rural residents are in danger of being victims of the same break-and-enters, burglaries and rapes as their urban counterparts. They also run the risk of losing crops, timber and expensive equipment to theft. Following are steps to protecting your rural property, some of which are unique to rural residents and some that everyone should be using.

  • Start a Neighborhood or Farm Watch. You can also organize a Neighborhood Patrol, where individuals take turns patrolling the area by vehicle, reporting anything suspicious to police.
  • Secure your residence. The idea that it is somehow better to not lock your doors and just trust people is ludicrous in this day and age. Get good locks on the doors, window bars on the windows and patio door bars on your sliding doors.
  • You can still be friendly and welcoming. But now you're protecting yourself too.
  • Light it up. Your residence, buildings and driveway should be well lit. Motion detector lights are great for areas you can't see well, like behind the barn.
  • Mark your property. Your machinery and tools should be engraved and your livestock branded or tagged.
  • Use your locks! Lock your car, your house, your storage buildings. It's the easiest way to prevent crime.
  • Secure the property. Keep fences in good shape, rope off access roads and hang up No Trespassing signs. These actions tell thieves you are taking care of your security, and they can just move on.
