Crime Prevention Tip of the Month

February 2006
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings!
Officer GordWelcome to the Crime Prevention Tip of the Month. First, a little about me. I'm a working Police Officer in my thirtieth year with a major North American Police Service. I've been involved in Crime Prevention for 9 years and specialize in CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). In fact, I instruct other officers in this at the Police College. In my position as Crime Prevention Officer, I consult with homeowners, businesses and developers in their attempt to design out crime.
I am delighted to contribute to Mr. Goodbar's website. I firmly believe that physical security is the best kind of security because it leaves no question in the mind of the criminal as to the premise's level of protection. In my opinion, the use of window bars is the next best visual deterrent to having a Police Officer standing on your lawn.
Dealing With Fear
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Living in constant fear of crime isn't fun, but it's the reality for many of us. There are a number of reasons why you may feel fearful. For instance, you may:

  • Be living in a high crime area
  • Have recently been the victim of crime
  • Belong to a group that is vulnerable to crime

Living in a state of fear leaves you feeling powerless and is extremely stressful. But there are things you can do to protect yourself and take back power and control.

Secure your home as much as possible. Check out back issues of this newsletter to find out how (the link's at the bottom of this article). Sometimes just knowing that you've done all you can to stay protected can alleviate your fears. This is particularly important if you've recently been the victim of a residential burglary.

Get informed. Every day we're bombarded with fear-inducing news stories that make it seem as if we're in constant danger. Find out what the crime statistics really are for your area and check out your local Police department's crime prevention initiatives. You may be a lot safer than you think.

Resist the temptation to isolate yourself. Isolation and suspicion lead to the downfall of communities. Get to know your neighbors; get involved with your community's youth; form a Block or Neighborhood Watch. You'll discover a big group of good people willing to watch out for you.

Here's one of my top tips: Block Watch and Neighborhood Watch are often shrugged off as either out of date or useless. In fact, this type of program is one of the best crime prevention tools available and it's free. In most cases the time commitment is very minimal. Email has replaced most of the phone calls that used to play a big part. The truth is that neighborhoods with active community watch programs enjoy a greatly reduced incidence of crime. Additionally, these programs allow the police to catch a greater number of criminals. So get involved!

Get as safe as possible.
