Crime Prevention Tip of the Month
June 2005
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings!
Welcome
to the Crime Prevention Tip of the Month. First, a little about me. I'm
a working Police Officer in my thirtieth year with a major North American
Police Service. I've been involved in Crime Prevention for 9 years and
specialize in CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design).
In fact, I instruct other officers in this at the Police College. In
my position as Crime Prevention Officer, I consult with homeowners, businesses
and developers in their attempt to design out crime.
I am delighted to contribute to Mr. Goodbar's website. I firmly believe
that physical security is the best kind of security because it leaves
no question in the mind of the criminal as to the premise's level of
protection. In my opinion, the use of window bars is the next best visual
deterrent to having a Police Officer standing on your lawn.
There is some confusion out there when it comes to buying bars for windows.
The problem is that there are two very similar items, Window Security
Bars and Window Guards, with two very different purposes. In this issue,
I'll review what makes a product good for protecting your window from
intruders. Next month, I'll discuss products best suited for preventing
falls from windows. These tips will save you the grief of purchasing
and installing the wrong kind of protection.
The term "window bars" is
used to describe bars that keep intruders out of your home. Other
terms include "security bars", "window
security bars" and "burglar bars". These bars are characterized
by the following features:
- Made of heavy-duty steel or iron
- Cannot be opened from the exterior.
Some have releasing systems, but these are designed so they cannot
be accessed from outside.
- Extra security features, like saw-resistance
and tamper-resistant hardware.
Where are they best used?
- basements
- main floors
- garages and sheds
- areas that are poorly lit or hidden from view
- Any window that can
be easily accessed
NOTE: If the window is needed as a secondary escape
route, you must use a bar that has an emergency release system.
