Crime Prevention Tip of the Month
October 2005
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings!
Welcome to the Crime Prevention Tip of the Month. First, a little about me. I'm a working Police Officer in my thirtieth year with a major North American Police Service. I've been involved in Crime Prevention for 9 years and specialize in CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). In fact, I instruct other officers in this at the Police College. In my position as Crime Prevention Officer, I consult with homeowners, businesses and developers in their attempt to design out crime.
I am delighted to contribute to Mr. Goodbar's website. I firmly believe that physical security is the best kind of security because it leaves no question in the mind of the criminal as to the premise's level of protection. In my opinion, the use of window bars is the next best visual deterrent to having a Police Officer standing on your lawn.
1 Easy Way You Can Stop Crime
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Less than 50% of crimes are reported to the police. There are 3 common reasons for this statistic:
- People are too busy to wait around for questioning by the police. It's easier to simply not report something 'small', like a purse-snatching or a group of suspicious looking non-residents in the area.
- People believe that the police are too busy to be bothered with minor incidents.
- People take the attitude that there is nothing the police can do anyway, so why waste the time.
Taking the time to call the police when you see any type of crime is the #1 way to keep your neighborhhood crime-free. Why? Just like in any other business, police resources are used where they are most needed. If we don't know that crime has increased in your area -because no one's calling to tell us- we can't increase the police presence in the neighborhood.
And increased police presence is a proven way to get rid of crime.
The police are never too busy to deal with minor incidents. In many cases, we'll be able to handle the report over the phone. And while we may not be able to catch the kid who just vandalized your property, we can use the information provided in your call to spot areas experiencing increasing criminal activity and move in to put a stop to it. Before it's too late.
Any time you see suspicious or criminal behavior in your neighborhood, call the police. We can't stop crime without you.
