5 Myths About Security Bars
November 2004
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Reader,
Welcome
to the Crime Prevention Tip of the Month. I am a working Police Officer
with 30 years experience with a major North American Police Service.
My involvement in Crime Prevention has spanned 9 years, and my specialty
lies with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). In my
position, I consult with homeowners, businesses and developers in their
attempt to "design out" crime.
I am a strong believer in the use of visual and physical deterrents
to raise the level of a premise's protection.
5 Myths About Security Bars
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can't beat the combination of visual and physical security
that window bars provide. But so many people are resistant to using
them!
I want to look at some of the myths surrounding security bars, and explain
why they no longer apply. And yes, I am going to plug the Mr. Goodbar
bars. I always have - that's why I ended up writing for their newsletter!
1.Your home will look like a prison.
That's the image people get in their minds, but it couldn't be further
from the truth. Take a look at the products out there today. The bars
made by Goodbar are white and simple in design, and they're mounted inside
the house. Your eye skips right over them. Unless you really want to
get in that window. Then they're only too obvious!
2. They're expensive.
Yes, custom-made window bars can be expensive. (And take forever to
get.) Mr. Goodbar security bars are designed to be affordable. That was
the whole point of making them. And just think, you're not making monthly
payments to a "monitoring" company.
3.They're a pain to install.
You know what? They aren't. You don't need a lot of "home handyman" expertise
or expensive tools.
4.They'll trap you in a fire.
VERY legitimate concern. We've all heard the tragic stories and I'd
never tell anyone to lock themselves into their homes just to keep someone
else out. If you are using security bars on a window that you
may need as an emergency exit, use a keyless locking system.They're
just as secure as a fixed bar.
5.They can be cut through.
Well, yes. Some can. But Mr. Goodbar has done a neat thing and inserted
a steel rod in the steel tubing. The rod is harder than the saw and rolls,
so the saw isn't able to "bite" into it.
Take a look at "the new generation" of physical security products
out there. See for yourself!
