Crime Prevention Tip of the Month
Holiday Security
December 2004
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Reader,
Welcome
to the Crime Prevention Tip of the Month. I am a working Police Officer
with 30 years experience with a major North American Police Service.
My involvement in Crime Prevention has spanned 9 years, and my specialty
lies with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). In my
position, I consult with homeowners, businesses and developers in their
attempt to "design out" crime.
I am a strong believer in the use of visual and physical deterrents
to raise the level of a premise's protection.
Are you asking for a break-in?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Whether you're going away or staying home this holiday season, you very
well may be at a higher risk for a burglary. The Number 1 point I want
to make this year is: Don't advertise your new tools, toys
or equipment!
Take a drive down any residential street on the day after Christmas.
You will be able to compile a list of everything everybody got as a gift.
This is because most of the packaging and boxes our gifts come in have
a big picture and description of the new item boldly displayed. You may
as well hang a sign announcing "New Property Inside - Come
and Get It"!
Before discarding any boxes, break them down and cut them down the side.
Then fold the pictures and descriptions so that they face the inside.
This way the only thing visible from the street is the brown cardboard.
Keep this trick in mind whenever you get something new, especially if
you're replacing items lost in a recent break in. There's no sense giving
the thief another opportunity and supplying him with the boxes to cart
the stuff off in as well!
Vacation Tips
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Stop all deliveries.
- Have a neighbor pick up fliers and keep an eye on the place.
- Give a trusted friend the spare key and have her check on the place.
- Have a neighbor park in the driveway.
- Use timers on inside and outside lights.
- Don't tell people you're away on your phone message.
- Consider hooking up with a community watch program.
- Before you leave, take a walk around your home and identify the weak
security areas. Then...do something about them!
